Salam Aidilfitri – Let the Ngabang begin

Kopi O Corner Nasi Ayam Bakar

Selamat Hari Raya to all our Muslim readers. Maaf zahir dan batin. After a month of fasting, Ramadhan has ended and Raya day has arrived. Of course, being Malaysians, even though those of us who are not Muslim will also share in the merriment of this festival as well. Cos we will be “ngabang-ing” ! Ngabang means visiting friends or relatives in Iban, or what we Malaysians generally call visiting. And visiting friends or family during their open house just means food! Oh lovely Raya food! Lemangs, curry, rendang, ketupats and all the lovely kuihs, I can taste them already.

Aidilfitri is a time for celebration and joy surrounded by family and friends. But personally, there is another selfish reason for me to be happy during this time. It means that pretty soon, the Malay stalls and restaurants will be open for breakfast and lunch! One of those places that I miss is Kopi O Corner, since they open only at night during Ramadhan.

One of my favourite dish there is the Nasi Ayam Bakar. It is a grilled chicken chop that is drenched with a sweet and spicy sauce and served with rice and some cucumbers. It is a slightly different take on the standard grilled whole maryland that is our ayam bakar. The deboned chicken makes it easier to eat and you get to keep your hands clean (unless of course you eat with your hands).

The flavours of this is quite strong and distinct. You get the sweetness of the kicap followed by a strong kick of the chillies (even more if you add the sambal). If you add the lime (this is recommended), you get a nice freshness as well. The smoky taste of the grilled chicken also adds another layer to the dish.  While this is not a sophisticated michellin star dish by any means, it is a good hearty meal.

Anyway, I’m keeping this short as Raya visiting calls and I would need to have plenty of rest before that! So have a great Raya folks! Drive safe and don’t mind the waistline!
